If you’re a full time student aged 16+ studying in the South Essex area, and your college is part of our scheme, you can save up to a third off travel to college when you buy a Weekly, Term-time, Monthly or Annual Season ticket on your c2c Smartcard.

Temporary Application Process due to Coronavirus

Due to the Coronavirus pandemic we have a temporary new process for applying for a Student Smartcard. If you don’t have a Smartcard, please set up an online account and order a regular Smartcard.

Once you’ve received it in the post you will need to send your name, date of birth and Smartcard number to your student Smartcard administrator at your college or institute.

Once your institute has confirmed your student status with us, we’ll then email you your discount code to use when buying your tickets online.

Returning Student?

There’s no need to reapply for the scheme if you’re a returning student. Your student discount is valid for one academic year and if you’re still a student make sure you get your discount by speaking to the administrator at your school or college. Your administrator will let us know that you’re still eligible for the Student Smartcard discount.

To buy your tickets, sign in to your account and add the discount code we supplied to you at the check-out.

How to apply




You can order a Smartcard online through the general online application for all Smartcard users.




Your Smartcard will be sent to you in the post. You then need to inform your institute that you've received your Smartcard by providing them with your name as it appears on the card, your date of birth and the Smartcard number on the card.




Once your institude has confirmed your student status with us then we'll email you your discount code so you can buy your Smart Student tickets to travel to college with. To buy, sign in to your online account then use the discount code provided to apply your discount at the check-out.

    Please speak to the administrator at your school or college who can make sure you get a new card which is activated with you Smart Student discount.

    If you haven’t received it within 15 working days of you ordering it, please give us a call on 0345 744 4422.

    Please ensure that the email address your discount is linked to is the same as the one registered to your Smartcard account. Please speak to your college or school administrator, they will need to confirm your enrollment before the discount is activated. If you have already tried this give our team a call on 0345 744 4422.

    The discount is only valid on journeys between your home station and nearest station to the college/university you are attending.

  5. 5. How does the 16-17 saver differ from the c2c Smart Student scheme? products-faq-angle-arrow.svg products-faq-angle-arrow-purple.svg

    The 16-17 saver is a railcard that you can buy for £30 which will give you 50% off most National Rail fares. This is a separate offer to the c2c Smart Student scheme but could be useful for any train journeys outside of your college trips that you might want to take or for exploring the country by train!
