Local rail operator c2c Railway – now part of GBR Anglia, which brings together the leadership of c2c, Greater Anglia and Network Rail Anglia under a single, unified structure – has announced that the current closure of the London-bound Platform 1 at Limehouse station will be extended until Monday 23 November following the freight train derailment at Barking on Friday 23 October.

The current phase of works at Limehouse began on Saturday 17 October and was originally due to be completed on Monday 2 November, following good progress made during earlier stages of the project this summer.

However, in response to the Barking derailment, the line through Limehouse station has been reopened to prioritise passenger services into and out of London Fenchurch Street. As a result, the works will now take longer to complete and are expected to continue until Monday 23 November. The London-bound Platform 1 will therefore remain closed throughout this period.

Customers travelling during this time are advised to plan alternative routes and allow extra time if their journey would usually terminate at, or require a change at, Limehouse station.

  • Trains will not stop at Platform 1 at Limehouse station until 04:40 on Monday 23 November.

Andrew Goodrum, Major Projects & Change Director at GBR Anglia, said:

“Following the freight train derailment at Barking, we have unfortunately been unable to complete the current phase of platform renewal works at Limehouse within the originally planned timescales, and we apologise to customers for the resulting extension to the Platform 1 closure.

“As a result, our ongoing work to replace the existing timber decking with a modern Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) composite system, whilst delivering further improvements to the platform and customer waiting environment, will now continue through until Monday 23 November.

“We recognise the inconvenience this extended closure may cause and would like to thank customers for their continued patience and understanding while these essential improvements are completed.”

Platform 1

During this phase of works, customers who would usually use the London‑bound Platform 1 at Limehouse station are advised that there will be no station entrance or exit access for London‑bound services, and no interchange with the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) for trains arriving from Essex.

Customers starting their journey from Limehouse and travelling towards London can either:

  • Take an Essex‑bound train to West Ham and connect with c2c services, or
  • Use TfL services to Tower Hill or connect with c2c services at West Ham station.

Anglia’s journey towards Great British Railways

Anglia’s integrated railway brings together the leadership of c2c, Greater Anglia and Network Rail Anglia under a single, unified structure.

This new structure is part of wider plans to create Great British Railways (GBR), bringing track and train closer together to deliver a better, more joined-up railway for customers and communities in Anglia.

The structure is designed to support closer operational coordination across infrastructure, train services and customer delivery.

Existing ticketing and customer arrangements remain unchanged, and customers will continue to see the current company identities as the railway transitions towards GBR.

The Anglia route serves a fast-growing region, connecting commuters, leisure travellers, ports, power stations and more, as well as Stansted and Southend airports.
