Local rail company c2c has announced that works to reinstate the full length of platform two at Basildon station will commence at the end of July.

There will be minimal disruption for customers while this takes place between Monday 21 July, with work scheduled to complete in December 2025.

Platform two will remain open throughout the programme of work and, although the contractor will be operating throughout the day and night, there will be minimal impact on customers.

c2c’s Head of Civil Engineering, Charles Isitt, said:

“We would like to thank our customers in Basildon for their patience as they waited for this important work to take place.

“It is great news that from December, our 12-carriage trains will once again be part of the service for customers in Basildon. While part of platform two is rebuilt, customers should expect minimal disruption, but as always our station colleagues will be on hand to advise.”

During the works, Southernhay Road will be subject to full and one lane closures.

ENDS

Why is this work at Basildon necessary?

  • Due to age, the existing platform needed to be replaced. An emergency intervention was carried out in September 2022 to remove a section of the platform to prevent further damage and therefore any risk to trains and passengers.
  • As a result of the partial platform closure, 12-car trains have not been able to call at Basildon in the Shoeburyness direction.
  • To enable the re-introduction of 12 and 10 car trains calling at Basildon in the Shoeburyness direction, c2c will reinstate the previously removed section of platform before the December timetable to provide a better and full service to customers.
  • The work will be delivered by AMCO Giffen.

Southernhay Road closures

  • Full Road Closure: 08:00hrs on Monday 28 July 2025 to 06:00hrs on Monday 8 September
  • One Lane Closure: 06:00 on Monday 8 September until 16:30hrs on Tuesday 30 November – the lane that will remain closed is closest to the railway, while the lane next to the bus station will re-open.
