Even though Christmas seems to start earlier each year, it never truly gets going until the Christmas lights come on. Great food, live music and the odd bit of ice skating go hand in hand with some of the UK’s finest light displays. Here are some of the ones we love. Oxford Street Christmas Lights

7 November 2017 - 5 January 2018

London’s most famous lights are 58 years young. 1,778 decorations and 750,000 LED lights inspired by falling snowflakes are expected to attract over one million Christmas lovers. This year the NSPCC are partnering with Sky Cinema for a festive ‘Light up Christmas for Children’ campaign.

Lakeside Shopping Centre

12 November - 24 December 2017

Lakeside transforms into its own version of Lapland. There’s ice skating, plenty of Christmas shopping options, and Santa waits with his elves in his grotto. There’s plenty going on in the stores too, providing fun for all ages.

Southend High Street

From 18 November 

On 18 November Southend-On-Sea has its Big Switch On. Christmas markets, live entertainment, fireworks and ice skating provide plenty of variety for everyone. Southend boasts the longest pier in the world, which means more room for entertainment.

Carnaby Street

9th November - 31st December 2017

Carnaby Street is known for its distinctive Christmas lights. Previous displays have included oversized robins, snowy moustaches and ‘LOVE’ in lights, so expect them to try to top those. As well as DJs and complimentary food and drink, there is a 20% discount at over 100 shops.

Trafalgar Tree

7 December - 4 January 2018

Since 1947 Trafalgar Square has received a Norwegian Christmas tree from Oslo as thanks for Britain’s support in WW2. Every night for a fortnight before Christmas, a different choir gathers and sings carols, and Norwegian white lights illuminate Nelson’s Column.

Covent Garden

14 November - 1 January 2018

Covent Garden loves a Christmas, and this year there will be 40 mistletoe chandeliers for the romantics to accompany 100,000 pea lights. Plus the return of the reindeer statue on the East Piazza and over 320 metres of garlands running between the chandeliers.

Leadenhall Market 

17 November 2017

One of London’s hidden gems has found fame in films such as Harry Potter. At Christmas the ornate hall is transformed into a beautiful winter wonderland. It’s a great place to take photos.
