Local school children help c2c commemorate Remembrance Sunday
National Express train operator c2c will be offering free travel for all veterans and service personnel on Remembrance Sunday and is also commemorating the event with a special train vinyl designed by children from a local primary school.
The special train vinyl was part of a new competition for schools who have adopted c2c stations along the route. The schools were asked to design a poster to commemorate Remembrance Day and the winners were Year 2 pupils from Cherry Tree Primary School, Basildon whose design depicts a soldier standing by a cross surrounded by poppies.
The children visited East Ham Depot this week to see their winning design being applied to the doors of a c2c train and also got the chance to sit in the driver’s cab and had a guided tour of the building.
Class teachers Megan Ghouse and Lisa Simmonds said the children had come up with the design themselves after learning about the two world wars in lessons. They painstakingly made up the poster with tiny bits of tissue paper and lots of glue and were thrilled with the final result.
Megan said: “The children have been so excited to see the c2c train with their design on the doors. This is a very proud moment for them and it looks absolutely brilliant close up. We’ve had a great time and this is certainly going to be a day to remember for both the teachers and children.”
Both military personnel and veterans will also be welcome to a free cup of tea or coffee courtesy of c2c when they pass through Fenchurch Street station on the morning of Remembrance Sunday.
c2c will also be displaying its Roll of Honour, commemorating local railwaymen killed during World War One, on the customer information screens at Fenchurch Street station and will be announcing the two minutes silence at 11am on both Remembrance Sunday and Friday 11 November.
