On-Train

We have commenced a trial for public WiFi internet access on 4 of our carriages.

The service allows anyone with a WiFi enabled device to get connected to the internet throughout their journey. The service is similar to any traditional static hotspot, the difference being that it works on the move.

The service will maintain your connection for the duration of the journey and can also support Virtual Private Network connections. Speeds of up to 2Mbps can be expected, but will vary according to the number of passengers using the service at any one time and the strength of the radio signal along the track.

The trial service is being provided by Nomad Digital and T-Mobile, who have a proven track record in providing on-train WiFi services.

You can identify the WiFi carriages by the HotSpot sticker on the train doors. Carriages without this signage do not have WiFi operating in it.

To ensure that as many c2c passengers can try the trail service out, we will be rotating the WiFi carriages around the network.

Finally, please use the service and tell us what you think about it.

What is public WiFi internet access?

WiFi is an increasingly popular technology that allows you to connect to the internet at broadband speeds from the office or at home (creating a hotspot ).

Public WiFi internet access (as being trialled by us) takes this a step further by turning the train carriage into a hotspot and works while the train is in motion.

Once you have internet access you can check you emails, connect to your office, watch a music video or breaking news or update your blog.

What you need?

A laptop, PDA or other portable device with WiFi (802.11b/g) capability.

Your existing device may already have the capability built-in, or you can buy a Wi-Fi 802.11b/g networking card from most electronics retailers.

How to connect?

Turn on your WiFi card and select the tmobile network (SSID). You may need to set this manually by selecting the following options under Start > Control Panel > Network Connections > Wireless Network Connection.

Ensure the Data Encryption (WEP enabled) is not selected (under Wireless Network Properties).

Ensure your laptop can 'Obtain an IP address automatically' and 'Obtain DNS server address automatically' (under General > Internet Protocol > TCP/IP > Properties).

Launch your web browser. You should automatically be connected to the WiFi start page.

If you don't receive a log in page, verify in the internet browser if any fixed proxy settings have been disabled (under Tools > Conditions > Internet Options > LAN Settings > deselect all boxes)

You may need to restart your device for settings to work.
