c2c, Britain's most punctual, and now greenest, rail operator and part of the National Express Group, is supporting Thurrock Council's celebration of Green Transport Week on Wednesday 20 June.
The Green Train, which puts up to 20% of its electricity use back into the grid, today (20 June) formed the 0854 from Fenchurch Street to Grays where it arrived at 0935 and was welcomed by Cllr Tunde Ojetola, Cabinet Member for Transport and Highways, Thurrock Council, c2c's Managing Director Mark Hopwood and colleagues from the Council and c2c.
Green Transport Week aims to raise awareness of transport's impact on the environment, highlight alternatives, make people stop and think before they travel and send a message to the government on green transport and environmental issues.
c2c is an excellent example of environmentally friendly travel. The trains cause no pollution, being quiet electric units. Each eight coach train can carry 580 seated passengers, so has great potential for reducing congestion. The new regenerative braking system now allows the whole fleet of 74 trains to reduce its power consumption significantly.
c2c's Route Director Kevin Frazer was keen to support Thurrock in highlighting Green issues. Environmental issues are, quite rightly, high on everyone's agenda and I am very pleased to be able to support Thurrock in their efforts to get people to think about how they get from A to B , he said. Our trains are undoubtedly an excellent example of environmentally friendly travel, being quiet, clean, pollution free, as well as reliable and punctual. In fact, we have already started looking at improving services to and from Thurrock with additional trains running since the timetable change in May. We are continuing to look at ways to make the service even more attractive so that more people will want to heed Thurrock's message that we should all think about where we want to go and how we want to get there with the least impact on the environment.
Councillor Tunde Ojetola, Cabinet Member for Transport and Highways, Thurrock Council said, Thurrock Council fully supports all forms of green rail travel and any efforts to reduce the carbon footprint and as a result I'm sure many more commuters will consider rail travel on C2C who are consistently one of the most punctual and reliable rail operators in the country."
