Over the years we’ve done extensive research into the fish and chip availability on the c2c route. We love our jobs and we’re regulars to Southend and the coast. So while we can’t pretend to write a definitive guide to fish and chips along the line, we can give you our own personal opinion of our favourites. You can agree, or not. But if you don’t, then be sure to send in your replacement for us to include next time!

Travel from London to Southend return for £12.10 with our online advance tickets, bought 3+ days in advance.

Southend Pier Fish & Chips

  • Nearest c2c station:  Southend Central (10min walk from station)
  • Address: Southend Pier and Railway, Western Esplanade, Southend-on-Sea SS1 1EE

Southend Pier Fish And Chips

Reward yourself after that 1.34 mile stroll along the famous Southend Pier. The fish shop in the beach hut at the end of the pier is back. As well as being some of the most well-earned chips in Southend, they also come with a fantastic view over the sweeping Thames Estuary coastline. Walk it off or take the pier train back.

To get here, take the c2c train to Southend Central. From there, it’s a 10 minute walk to Southend Pier.

Kingfisher Fish & Chips

  • Nearest c2c station:  Southend Central (6min walk from station)
  • Address: Queens Road Southend, 5 Queens Rd, Southend-on-Sea SS1 1LT

Kingfisher Chippy

When we put out this article on Facebook we had a resounding reply to add the Kingfisher to the list. This one had the big thumbs up from our fans as being ‘batter’ than all the others. It’s a bit of a detour away from the seafront but the walk is worth it.

Oldham’s Fish Restaurant

  • Nearest c2c station: Westcliff (12min walk from station)
  • Address: 13 West Rd, Westcliff-on-Sea, Southend-on-Sea, Westcliff-on-Sea SS0 9AU

oldhams fish restaurant

Fresh, filling and when the locals tout Oldhams as the best in town, you know you’re onto a winner. It’s a bit of a hike from the beach (and the nearest station is Westcliff) but it’s worth the trek for the food. Located just across from Westcliff’s Palace Theatre it’s been keeping locals happy since 1967. Absolutely delicious.

Van Looy’s Fish and Chips

  • Nearest c2c station: Southend Central (1min walk from station)
  • Address: 16 Clifftown Rd, Southend-on-Sea SS1 1AB

van looys fish and chips

If you get off the train starving (as we always do) Van Looy’s is ideal. It’s right across the road from Southend Central and serves hearty fish and chips, just what you need for a busy day on the beach! As well as the obligatory cod and mushy peas they’re also fully licensed, which gives them extra bonus points in our book.

The Peterboat

  • Nearest c2c station:  Leigh-on-Sea (10min walk from station)
  • Address: 27 High St, Leigh-on-Sea, Southend-on-Sea, Leigh-on-Sea SS9 2EN

the peterboat leigh on sea

It’s as much about the venue as the food here at the Peterboat. The huge terrace gets busy in summer, but as a result, there’s a great buzz and atmosphere. Right on the sea wall, it’s a great stop on a walk along the coast – or as a venue itself. If you don’t want to choose from the range of fish dishes, there’s a cockle shed serving all your local delights. And they serve Rossi ice cream. Say no more.

Olivers By The Beach

  • Nearest c2c station: Westcliff (12min walk from station)
  • Address: 12-14 Western Esplanade Kiosk 6, Westcliff-on-Sea, Southend-on-Sea SS1 1DL

This family-run cafe, set along the Western Esplanade is home to some of the freshest and highly regarded seafood in Westcliff. This is a perfect location to grab some takeout food for lunch and walk along the beach or through the Southend cliff gardens as it is perfectly located in between the two.

West Road Fish Bar

  • Nearest c2c station:  Shoeburyness Station (19min walk from station)
  • Address: 104 West Rd, Shoeburyness, Southend-on-Sea SS3 9DS

west road fish bar

Just a short walk from the Shoeburyness seafront (and the same in the other direction from the train station) is the West Road Fish Bar. It’s what we’d call a functional place. There’s fish and chips, there’s seating. And if you’re hungry and tired that’s all you need. Don’t forget those mushy peas though.

Sands by the Sea

  • Nearest c2c station:  Southend Central Station (12min walk from station)
  • Address: Icon Building, Western Esplanade, Southend-on-Sea SS1 1EE

sands bistro

Sands by the Sea is popular for weddings and events, thanks to panoramic views over the estuary and its open sun deck. It’s found in the heart of Southend, opposite the popular Three Shells Lagoon and right on the beach. If you like wine and a view with your fish and chips, then this is the place for you.

Cafe Rebecca

  • Nearest c2c station: Southend Central Station (11min walk from station)
  • Address: Pier West Cafe Western Esplanade, Southend-on-Sea SS1 1EE

Another family-run option set along the Western Esplanade is Cafe Rebecca. This cafe has received a multitude of praise for its affordable pricing, quality of food and welcoming staff. This pet-friendly fish and chips shop has street parking nearby and is opposite Adventure Island Park and Southend Pier.

The Fish House

the fish house

Situated away from bustle of the seaside, this chippy has been around for almost 30 years. Due to its close proximity to Southend United’s ground Roots Hall (across the road) it’s a favourite of the United fans and is jam packed on match days.
