July 2008
Issues discussed at the July Panel meeting are as follows:
Grab Rails on Class 357 units
Four engineering solutions had been investigated by c2c following customer concerns for safety during times of heavy train use. These include:
- Extending the rail on the ceiling through the saloon (only suitable for taller passengers)
- Extending the rail on the end of the luggage rack (only suitable for taller passengers)
- Replacing the seat top grab handle with an outer ring (quote received but not financially viable)
Using a 'boss' (update to follow)
Post-Incident Review - Bromley-by-Bow Bomb
c2c confirmed that this incident was unprecedented in scale and one of the most complex c2c has had to deal with.
After the incident, the Panel was consulted for feedback which was used in a review workshop seven days after the incident. Key findings were:
- The incident was unique due to the location and the large number of third parties involved
- A post-incident summary of positive feedback and areas for improvement was circulated
Comments from the Panel included:
- Public concern that trains were running close to the bomb and that the public were unaware as to whether the bomb had been made safe. c2c confirmed trains only ran after the area was declared safe.
- It was suggested that c2c and LUL should work more closely and share information during future incidents. c2c agreed.
- There were a number of comments on the website and text alerts service. c2c confirmed that a full review would take place.
The use of CIS systems was questioned and c2c confirmed that thought had been given to shutting down the system but this would have shut down the PA system also.
Future Discussion Topics
The following was considered for future discussion:
- Quiet carriages
- Train interior design
- Condition and security of stations
- c2c's position on dealing with environmental / climate change issues
Timetable changes

- Grays bay platform extension project
- Extension of Oyster pre-pay
